Belhaven Reading
The Summer Reading Program at Belhaven Estates grew from our volunteers at Paw Creek Elementary School. The idea was to provide some reading opportunities during the summer for the kids in that neighborhood to help build better reading skills. We were over joyed by the books that were given as donations from teachers, friends, and families. Some money donations have been used as well to purchase specific books and supplies for the kids.
We meet for 6 Tuesdays -starting the first Tuesday after the 4th of July thru mid August. We have given the kids backpacks/book carriers on the first day each year. They may take as many books for the week as they like, returning them the next week for new books or keep books for another week. We also have some small craft for them to make and or a game to play. The last Tuesday In August, along with management of Belhaven Estates, we have had final turn in of books with a party and back to school supplies for each child. They are part of the Freedom Division CMPD and have had visits by the community officers and firefighters most summers. We have also been able to “meet the buses” at Christmas and end of school to hand out treats and give away books. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we were not able to have this summer, but do plan to continue in the future. |
